PRAC Calls Off Itanagar Bandh After Government’s Positive Response
ITANAGAR | November 4:
The Public Rights Action Committee (PRAC) on Wednesday announced the withdrawal of its bandh in Itanagar following a positive response from the Arunachal Pradesh government to its demands.
The committee had been seeking the release of protesters booked under the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (APUAPA), along with the upgradation of Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), operationalisation of the Drug Testing Laboratory (DTL) and expeditious completion of the NH-415 highway.
Addressing the decision, PRAC Protest Chairman Takam Sonia stated that the issue of detained activists had been taken up by the Siang Indigenous Farmers' Forum (SIFF), the parent organisation leading the movement.
He said the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) had formally invited SIFF representatives for dialogue on the matter, signalling the government's willingness to engage with the organisation.
Sonia also informed that the state government had scheduled a meeting with the PRAC delegation on Thursday to discuss the demands concerning the improvement of healthcare infrastructure at TRIHMS and the pending completion of NH-415.
Clarifying the committee's position, Sonia emphasised that the withdrawal of the bandh should not be construed as a suspension of its demands or the conclusion of its agitation.
He further stated that PRAC would continue to stand with SIFF on the issue of detained activists. If SIFF proceeds with its movement despite the proposed dialogue, PRAC would also maintain its position and continue pressing for the release of the detainees.
The committee also acknowledged the support extended by Youth for Change, Cockroach Janta Party, and various community-based organisations (CBOs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that participated in the bandh.
PRAC maintained that its campaign would continue until tangible measures were taken by the government towards addressing its demands.
