TAWANG | October 12:

The five-day 5th State Level Archery Championship 2026 concluded at the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Sports Stadium in Tawang on Monday, with the Indian Army announcing an initiative to identify and nurture promising young archers from Arunachal Pradesh.

Lieutenant General Neeraj Shukla, AVSM, SM, General Officer Commanding (GOC), Gajraj Corps, attended the closing ceremony as the chief guest, while Leki Gombu, Zilla Parishad Chairperson (ZPC), was the guest of honour.

Indian Army to Support Young Archers with Training and Education

A major highlight of the ceremony was the announcement by Lieutenant General Neeraj Shukla that talented and deserving young archers identified through the championship would be given opportunities for advanced training at the Army Sports Institute in Pune.

Under the proposed initiative, the Indian Army would take responsibility for their education, food and accommodation during the training period, helping young athletes focus on developing their sporting abilities.

He further stated that archers who attain 18 years of age and wish to join the Army would be considered for direct recruitment.

The Army commander also acknowledged the encouragement and support extended by Chief Minister Pema Khandu towards the initiative.

Highlighting the Army's commitment to sporting excellence, he said efforts were underway to nurture young talent across six sporting disciplines and prepare promising athletes for upcoming national and international competitions.

The selection process is scheduled to begin in Tawang by the end of October 2026. The initiative is expected to create new opportunities for young people in Arunachal Pradesh to pursue sports while building a secure future.

ZPC Highlights Growing Career Opportunities in Archery

Addressing the gathering, ZPC Leki Gombu congratulated the participating archers and encouraged them to remain disciplined, dedicated and determined in their pursuit of excellence.

He thanked Chief Minister Pema Khandu for his continued support in promoting sports across the state.

Recalling the traditional roots of archery in the region, Gombu observed that the sport was once largely practised during the Losar festival. With increasing institutional support and better training opportunities, he said, young people can now look at archery as a professional career.
