BJP Arunachal Defends ECI, Rejects SIR Allegations

ITANAGAR|October 5:

The Arunachal Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come out in strong support of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, dismissing allegations raised by opposition parties as politically motivated and misleading.

Addressing a press conference in Itanagar, BJP spokesperson and MLA Topin Ete, along with State Secretary Joram Tat, said the ECI operates within the constitutional framework under Article 324 and defended the institution’s functioning.

Ete said differences or deliberations among Election Commissioners should not be portrayed as evidence of institutional weakness, describing such discussions as part of the normal functioning of a constitutional body.

On the SIR exercise, Ete compared the periodic revision of electoral rolls to cleaning a water tank, saying the process is intended to remove duplicate, deceased and relocated voters while ensuring that eligible citizens remain included in the electoral process.

He also highlighted the role of political parties in the revision process through their Booth Level Agents (BLAs). According to him, citizens whose names may have been left out can seek inclusion by following the prescribed procedure.

Rejecting allegations that the electoral system is being manipulated in favour of the ruling party, Ete questioned how opposition parties had secured electoral victories in states and Union Territories including Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand if the system was inherently biased.

He further criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for raising questions over the credibility of elections without, according to him, providing substantive evidence to support the allegations.

The BJP leaders called on political parties to approach electoral issues through constructive and fact-based debate, stressing that public confidence in democratic institutions should not be undermined by unsubstantiated claims.
