Camera Trapping Begins in Tirap Community Forest
Khonsa, September 25:
In a significant step towards community-led biodiversity conservation, the Hinthong Foundation has launched a camera-trapping initiative in the community forest of New Tupi village in Tirap district.
The Tirap-based registered non-profit organisation has been working in the field of biodiversity conservation for the past five years.
Its co-founders, conservationists Chajo Lowang and Sara Khongsai, have been promoting community participation in efforts to protect the region’s forests and wildlife.
The initiative is aimed at documenting wildlife movement through non-intrusive camera traps, with the broader objective of improving understanding of the forest’s biodiversity and supporting future conservation measures.
The deployment was carried out with active participation from the local community. Around 15–20 people, including the village Chief, community leaders, Youth President, an intern and Hinthong Foundation volunteers, took part in the exercise.
Techu Aran, former Deputy Commissioner of Tirap and an advisor to the Foundation, also joined the deployment.
During the exercise, participants recorded several signs of wildlife activity, including footprints of wild boar and barking deer and claw marks believed to have been left by a Himalayan black bear.
Feeding sites of wild boars were also identified, while a pangolin burrow had been spotted earlier in the forest.
Villagers, along with Kime Obin, field biologist with the Morey Conservation Foundation and resource person for the initiative, also reported hearing calls believed to be from Hoolock gibbons in the area.
Obin guided the team on the technical aspects of camera trapping, including selecting suitable locations and properly installing the equipment. The initiative has also received support from the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF).
The camera-trapping exercise is expected to generate valuable information on wildlife presence and movement in the community forest while strengthening local awareness and community stewardship of forest resources in Tirap district.
