APFPA Demands Immediate APFA Election

ITANAGAR, September 19:

The Arunachal Pradesh Football Players Association (APFPA), affiliated with the Football Players Association of India (FPAI), has called for an immediate, fair and transparent election of the Arunachal Pradesh Football Association (APFA), seeking greater clarity and accountability in the administration of football in the state.

In a statement, the APFPA said it understands that the last APFA AGM-cum-election for the selection of office bearers was held on February 3, 2022. The association has questioned the status of the present executive body following the completion of what it describes as the normal four-year term on February 3, 2026.

The players’ body has sought clarification on the continuation of the existing executive members and whether any formal extension was granted beyond the stated term.

“We are not against any individual or group. Our concern is transparency, accountability and the future of football in Arunachal Pradesh,” the APFPA said.

APFPA Seeks Disclosure of Election Documents

The APFPA has urged the APFA to make key election-related documents and information publicly accessible. These include the official election notification and schedule, the applicable Constitution and Bye-Laws, details of any extension granted to the existing executive body, and the electoral roll.

The association has also sought details of voting rights of affiliated District Football Associations, eligibility criteria for candidates and information about the Returning Officer or Election Committee.

It further called for publication of the final election results and proceedings after completion of the electoral process.

Seeks Clarity on Election Notification

The APFPA said it has received information that an election notification may already have been issued. If so, it has requested the APFA to publish the notification through its official website and official social media platforms, including its Facebook page.

According to the players’ association, making the notification publicly available would allow players, clubs, district associations and football supporters to access authentic information about the electoral process.

The APFA’s official website identifies the organisation as the Arunachal Pradesh Football Association and provides information on its activities and affiliated members.

Questions Compliance With Applicable Rules

The APFPA has also sought clarification on whether the proposed election is being conducted in accordance with the applicable APFA Constitution and Bye-Laws, requirements of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), and the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, wherever applicable.

The National Sports Governance Act, 2025 was enacted on August 18, 2025, with provisions concerning governance, transparency, accountability and ethical practices in sports administration. Different provisions of the legislation have been brought into force in phases.

The National Sports Governance (National Sports Bodies) Rules, 2026 were notified by the government on January 12, 2026, providing a framework for governance standards, election procedures and related requirements for sports bodies within their statutory scope.

Calls for Fresh Mandate

The APFPA said a properly conducted election would provide a fresh mandate to the football administration and could help address future disputes and concerns relating to governance.

“Football belongs to the players and people of Arunachal Pradesh,” the association said, emphasising that players, clubs, district associations and football supporters have a legitimate interest in transparent administration of the sport.

The association also said football administration should not be controlled by any individual, group or faction through an unclear or non-transparent process.

The APFPA has therefore called for a fresh, fair, transparent and constitutionally compliant election, while seeking an opportunity for eligible new office bearers to contribute to the development of football in Arunachal Pradesh.

The association summed up its demand with the message: “Transparent Election, Accountable Governance and Development of Football in Arunachal Pradesh.”
