Nocte Community Adopts New Script

DEOMALI, August 29: 

The Nocte community has reached a historic milestone with the adoption of the proposed Nocte Script at a General Body Meeting held at Wangcha Rajkumar Government College (WRGC), Deomali, on Saturday.

The meeting was organised by the Nocte Script Development Committee in collaboration with Wangcha Rajkumar Government College, Deomali, with participation from representatives of various Nocte-speaking communities.

Representatives from Hahwakhun, Ollo, Khappa, Tang and Phungsung communities attended the meeting and offered suggestions to make the proposed script more inclusive. They also emphasised the scope for further amendments and refinement as the script develops.

The meeting was chaired by Arunachal Pradesh Environment and Forests Minister Wangki Lowang. The programme followed the scheduled agenda and also featured cultural performances by students of Government Higher Secondary School, Deomali, and WRG College.

The main highlight was the presentation of the proposed Nocte Script by Dr Wanglit Mongchan. Representatives of different Nocte dialect groups discussed the script, shared their views and deliberated on future strategies for its development.

Following the discussions, the representatives wholeheartedly endorsed the proposed script as presented by Dr Mongchan, marking a significant step towards creating a common written form for the Nocte language.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Wangki Lowang appreciated Dr Wanglit Mongchan and the members of the Nocte Script Development Committee for their efforts to preserve and develop the linguistic heritage of the Nocte community.

The Minister described the adoption of the script as a landmark achievement that would benefit future generations and strengthen the preservation of the community’s linguistic identity.

He also encouraged the community to work towards developing a multidialectal Nocte dictionary to facilitate wider understanding and communication among different Nocte-speaking groups.

Emphasising the importance of linguistic and cultural assimilation, Lowang urged members of the community to rise above minor differences and work collectively in the larger interest of the Nocte community.

He further called for embracing positive changes and collective efforts to ensure the continued development, preservation and promotion of the Nocte language and culture.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Watsen Bangsia, Principal of WRG College.

The adoption of the Nocte Script is being seen as a historic step towards preserving the community’s linguistic heritage, strengthening unity among different Nocte-speaking groups and carrying its linguistic identity forward for generations to come.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. NNMR Seeks Action Against Yachuli MLA Over Podum Remarks

 ITANAGAR, September 15: The Nyishi Nyidung Mwngjwng Rallung (NNMR) has submitted a complaint to the Speaker of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly seeking action against Yachuli MLA Toko Tatung over remarks concerning the traditional Nyishi Podum/Byopia headgear. In its representation dated September 14, 2026, the organisation alleged that Tatung made a “misleading” statement about the origin and development of the traditional headgear during the Motion of Thanks to the Governor’s Address in the Assembly on March 11, 2025. According to the complaint, Tatung had questioned the originality of the traditional Podum and suggested that the modern artificial version was started by a Christian man. The organisation said the remarks misrepresented the historical and cultural origins of the headgear.
