MMT Seeks Permanent Affiliation, Staff Strengthening for DKGC Tawang

Tawang, August 30:

The Monpa Mimang Tsogpa (MMT), the apex body of the Monpa community in Tawang and West Kameng districts, has urged the Arunachal Pradesh Government to expedite the process of granting permanent affiliation to Dorjee Khandu Government College (DKGC), Tawang, with Rajiv Gandhi University.

In a memorandum dated August 29, 2026, addressed to the Minister for Education, MMT also sought urgent steps to strengthen the college’s teaching and non-teaching staff and improve its infrastructure.

MMT said DKGC has been functioning under temporary affiliation with Rajiv Gandhi University, Rono Hills, Doimukh, for nearly nine years. It said permanent affiliation would open wider opportunities for research collaboration, institutional partnerships and academic development for students and faculty.

For the affiliation process, MMT highlighted the need for a regular principal, adequate regular teaching faculty with prescribed qualifications, including PhD wherever required, and sufficient non-teaching staff.

According to the memorandum, the college currently has 16 teaching faculty members, including six guest faculty, against an identified requirement of 34 posts, leaving a shortfall of 19 positions.

The department-wise requirement includes five posts each for Economics, English, Geography, Hindi, History and Political Science, two for Education and two for Sociology.

MMT has also sought the creation and appointment of 13 non-teaching posts, comprising one Librarian, one Library Assistant, one Laboratory Assistant (Geography), two UDCs, two LDCs, one Computer Operator/DEO and five MTS posts.

The organisation urged the government to take up the creation and sanctioning of these posts with the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education, Itanagar, and the concerned recruiting authorities at the earliest.

MMT also placed several infrastructure requirements before the government, including adequate library furniture and equipment, development of a dedicated playground and construction of a permanent boundary wall around the college campus.

It further requested consideration of adjoining land currently held by the Department of Fisheries, along with its Semi-RCC Type-V, Type-IV and Type-III quarters, for transfer or allotment to the college.

According to MMT, the additional land would help the college meet UGC-prescribed land norms and create space for a girls’ hostel and playground, while also addressing the needs arising from Tawang’s terrain and disaster-risk considerations.

The memorandum acknowledged the government’s support to the college in recent years, including provision of an official vehicle, demarcation of college land, construction of the library building, establishment of a Geography Laboratory and construction of a multipurpose auditorium under PM-USHA, which is currently under construction.

MMT President Phurpa Wangyal and Secretary General Tsering Sonam said the continued strengthening of DKGC is a shared aspiration of the organisation, the government and elected representatives.

They urged the government, Rajiv Gandhi University, concerned departments and the district administration to work together to address the requirements in the larger interest of students pursuing higher education in Tawang district.
