DLSA Tawang Holds Two-Day Legal Awareness Campaign

TAWANG, August 24: 

The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Tawang, in collaboration with the District Police Tawang, conducted a two-day legal awareness campaign aimed at strengthening legal understanding among police personnel and residents of the border areas.

The first day of the programme was held on August 21, with the Learned Session Judge, Bomdila, Learned Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Tawang, Special Public Prosecutor (SPP), advocates, around 90 police personnel and members of the public in attendance.

During the interaction, the judges and SPP highlighted common loopholes in police investigations that can lead to the acquittal of accused persons. 

Special emphasis was placed on cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Police officers actively participated in the session and personally raised their doubts and concerns related to investigation procedures. The interaction focused on improving professional standards and ensuring that investigations are fair, thorough and scientifically conducted.

The campaign emphasised that professional and scientific investigation is essential to ensuring justice for victims while also upholding the rights of accused persons.

On the second day, as part of the Superintendent of Police's visit to the border areas, another legal awareness programme was conducted at Mago village in collaboration with the DLSA and District Police Tawang.

More than 80 villagers from the border areas attended the programme, where they were made aware of various legal provisions and their rights under different laws.

The sessions covered topics including the Nyaya-related criminal laws (NCL), NDPS Act, POCSO Act, Motor Vehicles Act and the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, among others.

The initiative sought to bridge the gap between legal institutions, law enforcement agencies and communities in remote border areas by improving awareness of legal rights, responsibilities and available remedies.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. Dr. Lige Basar, Three Others Killed in Assam Crash

  Khetri/Itanagar, May 29:  A tragic road accident in Assam's Khetri area on Friday claimed the lives of four people from Arunachal Pradesh, including a senior veterinary officer, his wife, and two medical students, triggering widespread condolences across the state. The deceased have been identified as Dr. Lige Basar, Veterinary Officer of Keyi Panyor district and president of the Basar Aao Welfare Association (BAWA), his wife Kunga Doima Basar, their son Gemar Basar, and Karma S. Khirmey, Gemar's friend and fellow MBBS student. According to traffic officials, the accident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and noon when the Mahindra Bolero (AR-01Q-0042) in which they were travelling reportedly collided with a truck parked along National Highway 27 in Assam's Khetri area. All four occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.
