Apatani Students Union Seeks 40 kmph Speed Limit on NH-13

ZIRO, August 23: 

The Apatani Students’ Union (ASU) has called for urgent road-safety measures along National Highway-13 in Lower Subansiri district, citing concerns over rising road accidents and traffic-related incidents in the Ziro Valley.

The demand was raised during a press briefing after the union reviewed traffic accident records registered at Ziro Police Station between 2021 and 2026. The ASU said speeding remains a major concern, particularly along populated sections of NH-13 near schools, residential areas and village access roads.

The students’ body has submitted a formal request to the Deputy Commissioner of Lower Subansiri for the installation of 40 kmph speed-limit signboards at 12 critical junctions along NH-13.

The proposed stretch covers the road from Lempia Tiniali to Pai Gate Tri-Junction. The ASU said stricter speed regulation along this corridor could help reduce accidents and improve the safety of pedestrians, motorists and other road users.

According to the union, excessive speed has been linked to fatalities, serious injuries and collisions, including incidents involving stray animals on the highway.

The ASU has also sought the installation of high-quality CCTV cameras at key locations along NH-13. It said surveillance would help monitor traffic violations, discourage reckless driving and assist authorities in maintaining law and order.

The union said a combination of speed restrictions, CCTV surveillance and stronger enforcement could significantly improve road safety along the busy highway corridor.

The ASU has also appealed to residents to follow the district administration’s directions on livestock management. It warned that stray cattle and other animals entering NH-13 can create sudden hazards and increase the risk of collisions.

The union urged livestock owners and the wider community to cooperate with the administration and ensure that animals are kept away from the highway.

According to the ASU, the Highway Department has agreed to cooperate with the proposed safety measures, with installation of the speed-limit signboards scheduled to begin on August 24.

The students’ body welcomed the cooperation of the authorities and appealed to commuters to respect speed limits and follow traffic rules once the measures are introduced.

The ASU said public cooperation would be essential to making the initiative effective and reducing accidents across Ziro and surrounding areas.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. NNMR Seeks Action Against Yachuli MLA Over Podum Remarks

 ITANAGAR, September 15: The Nyishi Nyidung Mwngjwng Rallung (NNMR) has submitted a complaint to the Speaker of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly seeking action against Yachuli MLA Toko Tatung over remarks concerning the traditional Nyishi Podum/Byopia headgear. In its representation dated September 14, 2026, the organisation alleged that Tatung made a “misleading” statement about the origin and development of the traditional headgear during the Motion of Thanks to the Governor’s Address in the Assembly on March 11, 2025.
