SCBA Backs Sonam Wangchuk's Hunger Strike

NEW DELHI, July 18: 

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has passed an Executive Committee resolution expressing deep concern over the health of education reformer and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is on an indefinite hunger strike. 

The resolution commended his efforts to highlight issues surrounding the NEET examination system and called for greater institutional sensitivity to his demands.

Adopted on July 16, 2026, the resolution stated that Wangchuk had placed his health and life at risk for the future of the country's children, bringing national attention to what the Committee described as serious concerns related to the NEET examination and the broader well-being of the nation.

The SCBA praised Wangchuk's longstanding contributions to education, innovation, and youth development, describing his work as a model of public service rooted in action, institution-building, and direct engagement with communities. 

It said his commitment has transformed countless lives and inspired young learners across the country.

The Executive Committee further observed that Wangchuk's ongoing fast has "served the national conscience" by underscoring the importance of moral courage in safeguarding India's constitutional democracy. 

It said the protest carries a message that citizens must work collectively to strengthen the nation's moral fabric and uphold democratic values.

Expressing regret over the response to the protest, the SCBA stated that despite Wangchuk's willingness to undertake such an extreme step in pursuit of educational reforms, institutional authorities had not responded with the urgency and sensitivity the situation demands. 

The Committee also voiced concern over what it described as systemic failures affecting millions of students and a decline in accountability across public institutions.

The resolution reflects the legal body's support for Wangchuk's peaceful protest while urging greater attention to the issues he has raised.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. Dr. Lige Basar, Three Others Killed in Assam Crash

  Khetri/Itanagar, May 29:  A tragic road accident in Assam's Khetri area on Friday claimed the lives of four people from Arunachal Pradesh, including a senior veterinary officer, his wife, and two medical students, triggering widespread condolences across the state. The deceased have been identified as Dr. Lige Basar, Veterinary Officer of Keyi Panyor district and president of the Basar Aao Welfare Association (BAWA), his wife Kunga Doima Basar, their son Gemar Basar, and Karma S. Khirmey, Gemar's friend and fellow MBBS student. According to traffic officials, the accident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and noon when the Mahindra Bolero (AR-01Q-0042) in which they were travelling reportedly collided with a truck parked along National Highway 27 in Assam's Khetri area. All four occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.
