NERIST Row: Arunachal Govt Assures Action

ITANAGAR, July 21:

The Arunachal Pradesh Government has assured concrete steps to address the ongoing NERIST issue following a high-level consultative meeting chaired by Home Minister Mama Natung on Tuesday.

The meeting was attended by Education Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona, Advisor Mutchu Mithi, the Principal Secretary (Home), Commissioner (Education), senior police officials, Home Department officers, and representatives of the ANSU and ANYA.

Addressing the meeting, Home Minister Mama Natung said the government remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of students while upholding the sanctity and academic excellence of the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST). 

He emphasized that the issue would be resolved through constructive dialogue and collective efforts.

The meeting comes amid growing protests over the functioning of NERIST. 

On July 11, ANSU had issued a seven-day ultimatum demanding that the Ministry of Education accept the resignation of NERIST Director Dr. Narendranath S., alleging gross administrative failure, financial irregularities, violation of recruitment rules, and non-compliance with statutory decisions.

After the expiry of the ultimatum, ANSU, ANYA, and several district students' unions staged a protest outside the NERIST campus on July 20, pressing for immediate action against the Director and seeking government intervention.

Following Tuesday's meeting, ANSU and ANYA leaders said the State Government has agreed to write to the Ministry of Education, Government of India, requesting acceptance of Dr. Narendranath S.'s resignation. 

They also said the government has decided to constitute an inquiry committee to examine the allegations and administrative issues concerning NERIST.

The student bodies described the meeting as a positive step and expressed hope that the Centre would take prompt action on the demands raised to restore confidence in the institution's administration.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. Dr. Lige Basar, Three Others Killed in Assam Crash

  Khetri/Itanagar, May 29:  A tragic road accident in Assam's Khetri area on Friday claimed the lives of four people from Arunachal Pradesh, including a senior veterinary officer, his wife, and two medical students, triggering widespread condolences across the state. The deceased have been identified as Dr. Lige Basar, Veterinary Officer of Keyi Panyor district and president of the Basar Aao Welfare Association (BAWA), his wife Kunga Doima Basar, their son Gemar Basar, and Karma S. Khirmey, Gemar's friend and fellow MBBS student. According to traffic officials, the accident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and noon when the Mahindra Bolero (AR-01Q-0042) in which they were travelling reportedly collided with a truck parked along National Highway 27 in Assam's Khetri area. All four occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.
