Itanagar Holds Candlelight March for Students, Demands Justice

ITANAGAR, July 26: 

Citizens, students, and social activists gathered in large numbers in Itanagar on Sunday evening to participate in a peaceful candlelight march titled "One Last Tribute".

The march was organised to pay homage to the students who lost their lives in connection with the recent paper leak issue.

Holding candles and placards, participants marched peacefully through the city while observing silence in memory of the deceased students. The gathering served as both a tribute to the victims and a collective call for justice, transparency, and accountability in the education system.

Participants also expressed solidarity with those who were allegedly assaulted during the recent protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

Speakers and attendees condemned the reported violence and reiterated the need to protect the democratic right to peaceful protest. The demonstrators renewed their demand for a fair, transparent, and accountable recruitment and examination system.

They said repeated paper leak incidents and examination irregularities have shattered the confidence of thousands of students and job aspirants across the country.

According to the organising chairman Liyom Lingu, the candlelight march was not only a tribute to the students who lost their lives but also a symbol of solidarity with students and youth across the country seeking justice and systemic reforms.

The same group had organised a peaceful protest rally in Itanagar on 20 July in support of activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was then on a hunger strike demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the paper leak issue.

The rally witnessed significant public participation and made national headlines, reflecting the growing concern among the youth over examination irregularities.

The candlelight march concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to continue peaceful and democratic efforts until justice is delivered and concrete reforms are implemented to safeguard the future of students and job aspirants.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. Dr. Lige Basar, Three Others Killed in Assam Crash

  Khetri/Itanagar, May 29:  A tragic road accident in Assam's Khetri area on Friday claimed the lives of four people from Arunachal Pradesh, including a senior veterinary officer, his wife, and two medical students, triggering widespread condolences across the state. The deceased have been identified as Dr. Lige Basar, Veterinary Officer of Keyi Panyor district and president of the Basar Aao Welfare Association (BAWA), his wife Kunga Doima Basar, their son Gemar Basar, and Karma S. Khirmey, Gemar's friend and fellow MBBS student. According to traffic officials, the accident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and noon when the Mahindra Bolero (AR-01Q-0042) in which they were travelling reportedly collided with a truck parked along National Highway 27 in Assam's Khetri area. All four occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.
