Tawang Hosts Monpa Speech Competition on Waste Management

TAWANG, June 29: 

The District-Level Monpa Speech Competition on the theme "Waste Management" was successfully held on Monday at Government Upper Primary School, PWD Colony, Tawang, bringing together talented students from across the district to promote environmental awareness through their mother tongue.

Organised by the Department of Education under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo, IAS, the competition aimed to encourage the use of the Monpa dialect while fostering awareness about responsible waste management and environmental conservation.

A total of 12 students, including winners and runners-up from six educational blocks of Tawang district, participated in the event. The young speakers impressed the audience with their confidence, eloquence, and insightful presentations on environmental protection, all delivered in the Monpa language.

The programme was attended by Deputy Director of School Education (DDSE) Hridar Phuntsok, Assistant Commissioner Kyidphel Sange Norbu, Block Education Officers Dondup and Thutan Wangchu, senior monk of Tawang Monastery Lama Thupten Tsering, former teacher of Tawang Monastery Geshe Thupten Gendun, along with teachers and students.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo highlighted the importance of preserving the Monpa dialect while adopting sustainable waste management practices to protect Tawang's natural beauty and cultural heritage. She encouraged students and teachers to use the Monpa language in their daily conversations, adding that learning Bhoti alongside other languages broadens knowledge and opens greater opportunities.

Assistant Commissioner Kyidphel Sange Norbu, DDSE Hridar Phuntsok, and Lama Thupten Tsering also stressed the importance of speaking the Monpa dialect in everyday life and called upon the younger generation to take collective responsibility for protecting the environment through proper waste management.

In the competition, Tashi Yangzom of Government Secondary School, Bomba, secured the first position, while Gom Yuton of Government Higher Secondary School, Jang, finished second. Rinchin Choizom of KGBV, Lungla, secured the third position.

The event reaffirmed the district administration's commitment to preserving the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of the Monpa community while nurturing environmental consciousness among students. 

By promoting the mother tongue alongside meaningful discussions on sustainable living, the initiative seeks to inspire a generation that is proud of its cultural identity and committed to building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Tawang.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. Dr. Lige Basar, Three Others Killed in Assam Crash

  Khetri/Itanagar, May 29:  A tragic road accident in Assam's Khetri area on Friday claimed the lives of four people from Arunachal Pradesh, including a senior veterinary officer, his wife, and two medical students, triggering widespread condolences across the state. The deceased have been identified as Dr. Lige Basar, Veterinary Officer of Keyi Panyor district and president of the Basar Aao Welfare Association (BAWA), his wife Kunga Doima Basar, their son Gemar Basar, and Karma S. Khirmey, Gemar's friend and fellow MBBS student. According to traffic officials, the accident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and noon when the Mahindra Bolero (AR-01Q-0042) in which they were travelling reportedly collided with a truck parked along National Highway 27 in Assam's Khetri area. All four occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.
