Second Body Recovered in Keyi Panyor Flash Flood; Death Toll Rises to Two

KEYI PANYOR, June 27: 

The death toll in the devastating flash flood triggered by a cloudburst in Arunachal Pradesh's Keyi Panyor district has risen to two after another body was recovered during the ongoing search and rescue operation on Saturday.

Deputy Commissioner Shweta Nagarkoti confirmed that the body was recovered at around 12:30 pm from the flood-affected Posa area by personnel of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), who have been conducting an intensive search operation since the disaster struck on June 24.

The deceased has been identified as Ballari Marak (30), who had been missing since the flash flood swept through the area. According to the Deputy Commissioner, Ballari is survived by her mother, and her last rites will be performed at a nearby church later on Saturday evening.

Ballari is the second confirmed fatality in the tragedy. The first victim, Nirma Gupta (35), a teacher at Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya (VKV), was recovered on the day the cloudburst-triggered flash flood occurred.

The district administration stated that search operations are continuing for the remaining three missing persons, identified as Elesh Marak (13), Tao Anjina (46), and Saurav Kumar.

Rescue teams comprising the SDRF, district administration, police, and other agencies remain engaged in the operation despite extremely challenging conditions, including difficult terrain, strong water currents, accumulated debris, and unstable slopes caused by the disaster.

The cloudburst-induced flash flood left a trail of destruction across the Posa area, damaging more than 20 houses, washing away several stretches of the Hoj–Posa Road, and cutting off connectivity to multiple villages.

Meanwhile, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Keyi Panyor, has informed that the Potin–Kimin Road continues to remain closed due to persistent landslides, continuous slippage of earth and debris, and unsafe road conditions. Although road restoration work is underway, authorities have advised the public to avoid travelling on the route until further orders in the interest of safety.

The district administration has assured that search and rescue efforts will continue until all the missing persons are located and has urged residents to follow official advisories and avoid disaster-affected areas.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. Dr. Lige Basar, Three Others Killed in Assam Crash

  Khetri/Itanagar, May 29:  A tragic road accident in Assam's Khetri area on Friday claimed the lives of four people from Arunachal Pradesh, including a senior veterinary officer, his wife, and two medical students, triggering widespread condolences across the state. The deceased have been identified as Dr. Lige Basar, Veterinary Officer of Keyi Panyor district and president of the Basar Aao Welfare Association (BAWA), his wife Kunga Doima Basar, their son Gemar Basar, and Karma S. Khirmey, Gemar's friend and fellow MBBS student. According to traffic officials, the accident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and noon when the Mahindra Bolero (AR-01Q-0042) in which they were travelling reportedly collided with a truck parked along National Highway 27 in Assam's Khetri area.
