Rare Himalayan Musk Deer Spotted in Anini
ANINI, June 27:
A rare sighting of the elusive Himalayan Musk Deer in the high-altitude region of Anini, Arunachal Pradesh's Dibang Valley district, has once again highlighted the exceptional biodiversity of one of India's most pristine wilderness landscapes.
The Himalayan Musk Deer was noticed and recorded on video by trekkers while traversing the high-altitude trails near Anini. In the footage, the elusive animal appears equally startled by the unexpected encounter, remaining almost completely motionless for nearly a minute as it stared towards the person recording before eventually disappearing into the rugged terrain. Such close observations are exceptionally rare given the species' shy and secretive nature.
Every year, thousands of trekkers from across India and abroad visit Anini, with the renowned Seven Lakes Trek being one of the region's biggest attractions. The trek offers breathtaking alpine landscapes, pristine glacial lakes and an opportunity to experience the extraordinary biodiversity of the Eastern Himalayas, making it a sought-after destination for adventure seekers, birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
The Himalayan Musk Deer (Moschus leucogaster) is among the Himalayas' most elusive mammals, inhabiting alpine forests, rhododendron scrub and rugged mountain slopes at elevations between 2,500 and 4,500 metres. Unlike most deer species, it does not possess antlers. Instead, male musk deer have elongated canine teeth and a musk gland, which has historically made the species a target for illegal poaching.
The species is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, receiving the highest level of legal protection in India. It is also listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to habitat degradation and illegal hunting.
Nestled amid the mist-covered mountains of Dibang Valley, Anini serves as the gateway to one of the most biologically rich ecosystems in the Eastern Himalayas. The surrounding Dibang Wildlife Sanctuary, one of India's largest protected areas, provides a vital refuge for numerous rare and threatened species that continue to survive in its remote, undisturbed forests.
The sanctuary is renowned for sheltering iconic wildlife such as the Mishmi Takin, a high-altitude goat-antelope found in the Eastern Himalayas, along with the elusive Himalayan Musk Deer and the endangered Red Panda. Its remarkable altitudinal range, from subtropical forests to alpine meadows, supports an extraordinary diversity of wildlife, including clouded leopards in the dense temperate forests and snow leopards in the higher alpine reaches.
Beyond its mammalian diversity, the sanctuary is also recognised as an important bird habitat. The dense forests surrounding Anini support hundreds of bird species, making the region a significant destination for ornithologists and wildlife enthusiasts. Rare Himalayan birds, including the scaly-breasted cupwing and the endangered white-winged duck, have been recorded from the broader landscape, underscoring the ecological importance of conserving this unique wilderness.
The latest musk deer sighting serves as another reminder of Arunachal Pradesh's remarkable natural heritage. As eco-tourism gradually develops in the region, conservationists stress the importance of balancing tourism with habitat protection to ensure that these fragile ecosystems and their rare wildlife continue to thrive for generations to come.
