Keyi Panyor Flood: Rescue, Relief Operations Intensified as Four Remain Missing

Itanagar, June 25:

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has said that the state government is closely monitoring the flash flood situation in Keyi Panyor district, where a devastating deluge struck the Possa area on Wednesday, causing extensive damage to homes, roads and other infrastructure. He said all concerned departments and agencies remain fully engaged in rescue, relief and restoration efforts to assist affected residents and restore normalcy at the earliest.

Providing an update on the ongoing operations, the Chief Minister said that 14 stranded tourists were airlifted from Ziro to Naharlagun on Thursday, while the evacuation of another 11 tourists and one patient from Daporijo is currently underway. A total of five helicopter sorties have been carried out jointly by the Indian Air Force and the State Civil Aviation Department to support evacuation and emergency relief. 

Critically injured flash flood victims have also been airlifted to Naharlagun for advanced medical treatment, while the mortal remains of those who lost their lives have been flown out to facilitate their return to their families.

On the ground, restoration work is progressing steadily. The first major road blockade from the Pitapool side has been cleared, and another key blockage near the Possa Bridge has also been reopened, significantly improving access to the disaster-hit areas and enabling rescue teams, relief materials and essential services to reach affected locations more efficiently.

Expressing grief over the tragedy, Khandu extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. He announced that ex gratia assistance to the families of the deceased, along with relief assistance for the injured and other affected families, will be provided as per the prescribed government norms.

The flash flood has left a trail of destruction across the Possa area, damaging numerous houses and properties. While rescue teams have recovered several bodies, four people are still reported missing, and search operations are continuing under challenging conditions to locate them. Authorities are simultaneously carrying out debris clearance, restoration of damaged infrastructure and assessment of losses in the affected areas.

The Chief Minister appealed to citizens to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable areas and strictly follow official advisories as rescue, relief and restoration efforts continue across the district.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. Dr. Lige Basar, Three Others Killed in Assam Crash

  Khetri/Itanagar, May 29:  A tragic road accident in Assam's Khetri area on Friday claimed the lives of four people from Arunachal Pradesh, including a senior veterinary officer, his wife, and two medical students, triggering widespread condolences across the state. The deceased have been identified as Dr. Lige Basar, Veterinary Officer of Keyi Panyor district and president of the Basar Aao Welfare Association (BAWA), his wife Kunga Doima Basar, their son Gemar Basar, and Karma S. Khirmey, Gemar's friend and fellow MBBS student. According to traffic officials, the accident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and noon when the Mahindra Bolero (AR-01Q-0042) in which they were travelling reportedly collided with a truck parked along National Highway 27 in Assam's Khetri area.
