CHF Pasighat Students Protest Transfer of Professor, Demand Posting Revocation

Massive protests erupted at the College of Horticulture and Forestry (CHF), Pasighat, under the Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, on Thursday as students staged demonstrations against the transfer and proposed joining of a professor who has been accused of sexual harassment during his previous posting at the College of Post Graduate Studies in Agricultural Sciences (CPGS-AS), Umiam, Meghalaya.

According to an official university order dated May 8, 2026, Dr. Pranab Dutta, Professor of Plant Pathology and Chairman of the School of Crop Protection at CPGS-AS, Barapani, Meghalaya, was transferred and posted to CHF Pasighat on administrative grounds.

The transfer sparked strong opposition from students, particularly female students, who expressed concerns over their safety and well-being. In a representation submitted to the Dean of CHF Pasighat on May 11, 2026, the Girls' Representatives of the Student Council voiced serious apprehensions regarding Dr. Dutta's arrival. The letter cited allegations of sexual harassment involving female students at his previous institution and warned that his posting could adversely affect the safety, dignity, and mental health of students on campus.

As tensions escalated, students gathered in large numbers on the campus premises, raising slogans and demanding immediate intervention from the university administration. Protesters categorically opposed the professor's joining and called for his termination, asserting that a transfer or suspension would not adequately address the concerns raised against him.

The agitation received support from the Adi Students' Union (AdiSU), which took a firm stand alongside the student community. Speaking to the media, AdiSU (APEX) Vice President Dutin Jamon urged the university administration not to allot official quarters to the professor. He stated that the union stands in solidarity with the students and would oppose any attempt to accommodate or allow the professor to remain in Pasighat.

The protesting students and supporting organizations continue to demand that the university administration immediately reconsider and revoke the transfer order, stressing the need to maintain a safe, secure, and respectful academic environment for all students at CHF Pasighat.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. Dr. Lige Basar, Three Others Killed in Assam Crash

  Khetri/Itanagar, May 29:  A tragic road accident in Assam's Khetri area on Friday claimed the lives of four people from Arunachal Pradesh, including a senior veterinary officer, his wife, and two medical students, triggering widespread condolences across the state. The deceased have been identified as Dr. Lige Basar, Veterinary Officer of Keyi Panyor district and president of the Basar Aao Welfare Association (BAWA), his wife Kunga Doima Basar, their son Gemar Basar, and Karma S. Khirmey, Gemar's friend and fellow MBBS student. According to traffic officials, the accident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and noon when the Mahindra Bolero (AR-01Q-0042) in which they were travelling reportedly collided with a truck parked along National Highway 27 in Assam's Khetri area.
