Tengam Celine Koyu Condemns Dambuk Assault

ITANAGAR, September 12: 

Former Miss Arunachal Tengam Celine Koyu has expressed shock and outrage over the alleged sexual assault of a 70-year-old woman in Dambuk, Lower Dibang Valley district, calling the incident “shameful” and “disgusting.”

In a social media post, Koyu said she woke up to reports of an elderly woman being assaulted after recently witnessing another case involving a minor. She described the latest victim as an “innocent grandmother” who was returning home after carrying wood.

“I genuinely don’t know what is happening to our Arunachal anymore,” Koyu wrote, questioning how society can better protect vulnerable people and ensure that perpetrators face accountability.

She called for the accused to receive the harshest punishment permitted by law, while urging that the survivor receive the justice and support she deserves.

Koyu also raised broader concerns about the need for greater awareness of consent, dignity and respect, particularly among young people. She questioned whether existing laws are sufficiently strong and whether they are being effectively enforced.

“We cannot keep reacting to every case with shock and anger and then move on until the next one happens,” she said, stressing the need for prevention, accountability and strict punishment.

The incident that prompted her remarks reportedly occurred on September 9 in Pablung village of Dambuk. Police said the 70-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted while returning home from her agricultural field. 

The accused, identified as Kangge Pertin, was arrested and subsequently remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody. 

A case was registered at Dambuk Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those concerning rape and attempt to murder. 

The Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society (APWWS) has also condemned the alleged assault and called for strict action against the accused. 

Koyu concluded her post by saying the situation had left her “beyond words,” while calling for a deeper societal conversation on violence, safety and dignity.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. NNMR Seeks Action Against Yachuli MLA Over Podum Remarks

 ITANAGAR, September 15: The Nyishi Nyidung Mwngjwng Rallung (NNMR) has submitted a complaint to the Speaker of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly seeking action against Yachuli MLA Toko Tatung over remarks concerning the traditional Nyishi Podum/Byopia headgear. In its representation dated September 14, 2026, the organisation alleged that Tatung made a “misleading” statement about the origin and development of the traditional headgear during the Motion of Thanks to the Governor’s Address in the Assembly on March 11, 2025. According to the complaint, Tatung had questioned the originality of the traditional Podum and suggested that the modern artificial version was started by a Christian man.
