Naharlagun Police Register FIR Over Suspected Chemical Ripening of Bananas

NAHARLAGUN, Sep 10:

Naharlagun Police have registered a case following a social media video allegedly showing the use of a suspected chemical substance to artificially accelerate the ripening of bananas near the TRIHMS Tri-Junction.

According to a press note issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Police, ICR Naharlagun, the video was reportedly posted on Facebook by Ngurang Takar Dopum and came to the police’s notice through social media on September 8, 2026.

Acting on the information, Inspector K Dev, Officer-in-Charge of Naharlagun Police Station, registered NLG P.S. FIR No. 0118 dated September 9, 2026.

The case has been registered under Sections 125, 274 and 275 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, read with Section 3(1)(zz)(iii) and Section 59 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Police said the exact nature and composition of the suspected substance have not yet been established. Samples and other evidence will be examined scientifically as part of the investigation.

The investigation will also seek to establish the identity of the person involved and determine whether the alleged practice violated prescribed food-safety standards or posed any risk to public health.

Dr Nyelam Nega, APPS, Superintendent of Police, ICR Naharlagun, said food-safety violations would be dealt with strictly in accordance with law.

He added that police remain vigilant and committed to taking prompt action on information concerning public safety, while stressing that the nature of the suspected substance would be established through scientific examination.

The development comes amid wider concerns over the use of unauthorised substances for fruit ripening. FSSAI prohibits calcium carbide for artificial fruit ripening, while permitted ripening methods must comply with prescribed safety procedures.
