GSS Bomba Leads Cleanliness Drive in Tawang
TAWANG, September 11:
In a meaningful effort to support the collective mission of keeping Tawang clean, green and plastic-free, the school family of Government Secondary School (GSS), Bomba, organised a cleanliness and waste-management drive across key community areas.
Led by Headmaster Ngyoktoo Tashi Wangchu along with the teaching staff, students representing the school’s three Houses carried out cleanliness drives at Gyangkhar Gonpa, Ungkhar village and the Lemberdung market area.
The initiative reflected the idea that education extends beyond textbooks and classrooms. Through practical community engagement, students learned the importance of civic responsibility, environmental protection and responsible waste management.
As part of the campaign, students distributed pamphlets and interacted with local residents to spread awareness about the 4Rs — Reuse, Reduce, Recycle and Refuse single-use plastic. They highlighted the harmful impact of plastic waste on the environment, including pollution of natural surroundings and waterways and threats to animals.
The drive also provided students with hands-on experience in waste management. The collected plastic waste was washed and, wherever possible, segregated before being sent for further disposal at the designated Material Recovery Facility (MRF).
The practical exercise helped students understand the importance of waste segregation at source and encouraged them to incorporate responsible waste-management practices into their daily lives.
The initiative also captured the true spirit of a Bagless School Day, where learning takes place through practical experience, community service and care for nature.
The school’s initiative also carries a wider message for the community: keeping Tawang clean cannot be the responsibility of students, schools and sanitation workers alone. It requires the participation of every citizen.
Residents are encouraged to refuse single-use plastic, avoid littering, segregate waste at source and help keep villages, markets, monasteries, streams and other public spaces clean.
The students of GSS Bomba have demonstrated how small, responsible actions can inspire meaningful change. Their example is a reminder that building a cleaner and healthier future begins with the choices each person makes every day.
