Swachh Silluk Abhiyan Receives Gold Medal

ITANAGAR, August 15: 

The Swachh Silluk Abhiyan (SSA) of Silluk village in East Siang district has been honoured with a Gold Medal among the State Awards presented on the occasion of Independence Day 2026.

The State Award list shows that only two Gold Medals were awarded this year, with Swachh Silluk Abhiyan being one of the recipients. 

The other Gold Medal was awarded to Sub-Inspector Tamo Bakhang of Police Station Chimpū, Itanagar.

The recognition honours the community-driven cleanliness and waste-management efforts that have transformed Silluk into a model of sustainable village development.

The Swachh Silluk Abhiyan was launched in 2019 under the leadership of local youth Kepang Nong Borang, with residents coming together to address waste, open cattle rearing and poor sanitation in the village.

Through regular community cleanliness drives, waste segregation, recycling, composting and better management of cattle, Silluk gradually transformed its surroundings.

Community participation, including the involvement of women and self-help groups, played an important role in sustaining the campaign.

The village has been recognised as the cleanest village in East Siang three times under the Chief Minister’s Award and has gained wider attention for its zero-waste efforts.

Silluk’s remarkable journey also reached classrooms across the country after the village was featured in the NCERT Class 3 Environmental Studies textbook in a chapter titled “Taking Charge of Waste.”

The latest Gold Medal award from the state Government adds another significant achievement to Silluk’s cleanliness journey, recognising the collective efforts of its residents and the continued work of the Swachh Silluk Abhiyan.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. Dr. Lige Basar, Three Others Killed in Assam Crash

  Khetri/Itanagar, May 29:  A tragic road accident in Assam's Khetri area on Friday claimed the lives of four people from Arunachal Pradesh, including a senior veterinary officer, his wife, and two medical students, triggering widespread condolences across the state. The deceased have been identified as Dr. Lige Basar, Veterinary Officer of Keyi Panyor district and president of the Basar Aao Welfare Association (BAWA), his wife Kunga Doima Basar, their son Gemar Basar, and Karma S. Khirmey, Gemar's friend and fellow MBBS student. According to traffic officials, the accident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and noon when the Mahindra Bolero (AR-01Q-0042) in which they were travelling reportedly collided with a truck parked along National Highway 27 in Assam's Khetri area. All four occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.
