SI Tamo Bakhang Conferred State Gold Medal

ITANAGAR, August 15:

Sub-Inspector Tamo Bakhang of Chimpu Police Station, Itanagar, was conferred the Arunachal Pradesh State Gold Medal on Independence Day 2026 in recognition of his dedicated service, courage and contribution to policing.

Bakhang was among two police personnel to receive the prestigious Gold Medal this year. A total of 23 state awards were conferred, including two Gold Medals, five Silver Medals and 16 Commendation Certificates.

During his service, Bakhang has been involved in tackling several drug-related and high-profile cases, particularly in the Capital region. His work in challenging operations has earned him recognition for his courage, professionalism and commitment to duty.

One of his notable assignments was the 2025 Hollongi Road gunfight, during a police operation against an alleged drug network. 

During the operation, an accused allegedly opened fire while trying to escape, with a bullet striking Bakhang’s bulletproof jacket and reportedly saving him from a potentially fatal injury.

Police returned fire and apprehended the accused, bringing the high-risk operation to an end. Bakhang’s role in the encounter highlighted his courage while carrying out a dangerous assignment.

The officer later sustained serious eye injuries while performing law-and-order duties during bandh-related violence near 6 Kilo, Itanagar. 

His vehicle was reportedly attacked with stones, shattering the glass and causing serious injuries that required specialised medical treatment.

The State Gold Medal adds another significant recognition to Bakhang’s service, particularly his contribution to tackling drug-related activities and handling challenging law-and-order situations. 

His journey reflects the risks often faced by police personnel while serving on the frontlines of public safety.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. Dr. Lige Basar, Three Others Killed in Assam Crash

  Khetri/Itanagar, May 29:  A tragic road accident in Assam's Khetri area on Friday claimed the lives of four people from Arunachal Pradesh, including a senior veterinary officer, his wife, and two medical students, triggering widespread condolences across the state. The deceased have been identified as Dr. Lige Basar, Veterinary Officer of Keyi Panyor district and president of the Basar Aao Welfare Association (BAWA), his wife Kunga Doima Basar, their son Gemar Basar, and Karma S. Khirmey, Gemar's friend and fellow MBBS student. According to traffic officials, the accident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and noon when the Mahindra Bolero (AR-01Q-0042) in which they were travelling reportedly collided with a truck parked along National Highway 27 in Assam's Khetri area. All four occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.
