Domin Karbak Honoured with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award 2025

New Delhi/Itanagar, August 13: 

Arunachal Pradesh’s rich folk and tribal dance traditions received national recognition as renowned folk dance exponent Domin Karbak was conferred the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award 2025 for his contribution to folk dance.

President Droupadi Murmu presented the award to Karbak at a special investiture ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on Thursday. A total of 115 artists were honoured with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowships and Awards for 2024 and 2025.

Karbak was recognised specifically for his contribution to the folk dance traditions of Arunachal Pradesh. His work has focused on preserving, promoting and strengthening the state’s indigenous cultural heritage.

Over the years, his artistic efforts have helped take Arunachal’s traditional performing arts to wider audiences, including platforms beyond the state and the country. 

His recognition highlights the cultural richness and diversity of Arunachal Pradesh’s indigenous traditions.

The Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, also known as the Akademi Puraskar, is a major national honour recognising outstanding contributions to India’s performing arts. The awards cover fields including music, dance, theatre, folk and tribal arts and other traditional art forms.

The award carries a cash prize of ₹1 lakh, along with a Tamrapatra and an Angavastram.

The 2025 honours included artists from across the country and recognised a wide range of traditional and contemporary performing arts. 

Karbak was among the artists selected under the Folk & Tribal, Puppetry, Mask Making and Instrument Making category for Folk Dance from Arunachal Pradesh.

President Murmu, while addressing the ceremony, highlighted the important role of artists in preserving India’s diverse cultural traditions. 

She emphasised that artists serve as custodians of the country’s collective cultural memory while also helping shape its cultural future.

She also called on senior artists to nurture and mentor younger generations so that traditional knowledge, artistic practices and cultural values continue to be passed on.

Karbak’s national recognition marks an important moment for Arunachal Pradesh’s indigenous performing arts and brings greater visibility to the state’s traditional folk dance heritage.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. Dr. Lige Basar, Three Others Killed in Assam Crash

  Khetri/Itanagar, May 29:  A tragic road accident in Assam's Khetri area on Friday claimed the lives of four people from Arunachal Pradesh, including a senior veterinary officer, his wife, and two medical students, triggering widespread condolences across the state. The deceased have been identified as Dr. Lige Basar, Veterinary Officer of Keyi Panyor district and president of the Basar Aao Welfare Association (BAWA), his wife Kunga Doima Basar, their son Gemar Basar, and Karma S. Khirmey, Gemar's friend and fellow MBBS student. According to traffic officials, the accident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and noon when the Mahindra Bolero (AR-01Q-0042) in which they were travelling reportedly collided with a truck parked along National Highway 27 in Assam's Khetri area. All four occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.
