AHV&DD Issues FMD Advisory as Mithun Outbreaks Hit Four Arunachal Districts

ITANAGAR, Aug 5:

The Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development (AHV&DD) Department has issued a statewide advisory after Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks were reported among Mithun in East Kameng, Pakke-Kessang, Papum Pare, and Dibang Valley districts.

The department has urged farmers and livestock owners to isolate infected animals immediately and report any suspected cases to the nearest veterinary officer without delay.

Officials have also appealed to farmers to ensure all eligible livestock are vaccinated during the 8th FMD Vaccination Drive, which is scheduled to begin in December 2026.

Director Dr. Danjan Longri said preliminary investigations found that the infected Mithun had not been vaccinated during the 7th FMD Vaccination Drive, conducted between May 1 and June 19, 2026.

Veterinary teams have so far investigated eight outbreak locations and collected samples for laboratory testing to confirm the disease.

Rapid Response Teams have been deployed to provide treatment, monitor the situation, and strengthen surveillance in the affected areas to prevent further spread.

The department has requested the public to cooperate with veterinary officials and strictly follow all disease-control measures to safeguard livestock across the state.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. Dr. Lige Basar, Three Others Killed in Assam Crash

  Khetri/Itanagar, May 29:  A tragic road accident in Assam's Khetri area on Friday claimed the lives of four people from Arunachal Pradesh, including a senior veterinary officer, his wife, and two medical students, triggering widespread condolences across the state. The deceased have been identified as Dr. Lige Basar, Veterinary Officer of Keyi Panyor district and president of the Basar Aao Welfare Association (BAWA), his wife Kunga Doima Basar, their son Gemar Basar, and Karma S. Khirmey, Gemar's friend and fellow MBBS student. According to traffic officials, the accident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and noon when the Mahindra Bolero (AR-01Q-0042) in which they were travelling reportedly collided with a truck parked along National Highway 27 in Assam's Khetri area. All four occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.
