AFTF Sets Aug 15 Deadline on Recruitment Demands

ITANAGAR, Aug 8:

The Arunachal Frontier Tribal Front (AFTF) has warned of a wider agitation across the state if the government fails to act on its recruitment-related demands by August 15.

The warning came during a mass rally and gathering at Indira Gandhi Park in Itanagar on Saturday, which the organisation described as a “final mass referendum rally” on the state’s 80:20 recruitment policy.

AFTF chairman Tadak Nalo called upon Chief Minister Pema Khandu to convene the Cabinet and settle the issue before Independence Day. 

The organisation is demanding either the complete withdrawal of the 80:20 recruitment ratio or the compulsory requirement of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC) for examinations conducted by the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) and Arunachal Pradesh Staff Selection Board (APSSB).

Addressing the gathering, Nalo said the recruitment issue had remained unresolved despite years of discussions and consultations. He questioned the need for another committee, arguing that the government could take a decision through the Cabinet.

Nalo said the AFTF would welcome a favourable decision before August 15 but cautioned that failure to address the demands could lead to a new phase of the movement.

He further claimed that more than 38 organisations had either participated in or extended their support to the rally, despite rainfall and a temporary disruption of the sound system.

According to Nalo, the movement should not be viewed as the initiative of a particular organisation or individual. He said the issue concerns the employment opportunities and future prospects of the youth of Arunachal Pradesh.

The AFTF chairman also referred to recruitment and reservation arrangements in several northeastern states, including Nagaland, Mizoram, Assam, Meghalaya and Sikkim, while rejecting the argument that legal or procedural complications made an immediate decision impossible.

He said the government was free to constitute any committee it considered necessary, but insisted that a final decision should be taken before August 15.

The organisation also warned that failure to meet the deadline could take the agitation beyond Itanagar. 

Nalo said the next phase would not be limited to another rally or dharna and could involve mobilisation in different parts of Arunachal Pradesh.

“The next phase will not be another rally or dharna,” he said, urging people across the state to remain prepared.

The AFTF maintained that the immediate responsibility now rests with the state government to decide whether to withdraw the 80:20 recruitment arrangement or introduce mandatory ST and PRC requirements for APPSC and APSSB recruitment examinations.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. NNMR Seeks Action Against Yachuli MLA Over Podum Remarks

 ITANAGAR, September 15: The Nyishi Nyidung Mwngjwng Rallung (NNMR) has submitted a complaint to the Speaker of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly seeking action against Yachuli MLA Toko Tatung over remarks concerning the traditional Nyishi Podum/Byopia headgear. In its representation dated September 14, 2026, the organisation alleged that Tatung made a “misleading” statement about the origin and development of the traditional headgear during the Motion of Thanks to the Governor’s Address in the Assembly on March 11, 2025. According to the complaint, Tatung had questioned the originality of the traditional Podum and suggested that the modern artificial version was started by a Christian man.
