Tawang Strengthens Community-Led Waste Management Efforts

Tawang, July 2: 

The Tawang district administration on Thursday convened a district-level meeting on Solid Waste Management at the Conference Hall of the Deputy Commissioner's Office under the chairpersonship of Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo, IAS.

The meeting brought together ADC Tawang Rinchin Leta, ADC Lungla Tashi Dhondup, Zila Parishad Members, representatives of the Indian Army, ITBP, NGOs, students, and Material Recovery Facility (MRF) operators from Jemeithang, Tawang, and Lhou to review ongoing waste management initiatives and discuss future strategies.

The programme began with a welcome address by ADC Tawang Rinchin Leta. A major highlight of the event was the inspiring speeches delivered in the Monpa dialect by Tashi Yangzom of Government Secondary School, Bomba, and Gom Yutton of Government Higher Secondary School, Jang, winners of the district-level waste management speech competition held last week. 

ADC Lungla Tashi Dhondup presented the achievements of the community-led waste management initiative in Jemeithang, describing it as a successful model driven by public participation. 

He noted that the initiative earned recognition for the then Circle Officer, Deewan Mara, who received the Governor's Silver Medal. He also said the Chief Secretary provided a vehicle for the Jemeithang MRF, while local MLA Tsering Lhamu supported the Lungla MRF with a vehicle and machinery for both facilities.

He further appreciated the NGO Further and Beyond for working closely with the district administration and local communities to make the initiative a success.

Sharing the community's experience, Jemeithang MRF Operator Chimi Yangzom explained how active public participation has transformed the area into a model for sustainable waste management. MRF operators Tashi Wangchu of Lhou and Thinlay of Tawang also spoke about their achievements and the challenges they continue to face.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo praised the Jemeithang MRF as an example that other Panchayat blocks should emulate. She urged Zila Parishad and Panchayat leaders to actively involve local communities in strengthening waste management systems across the district.

The Deputy Commissioner observed that waste is still being dumped without proper treatment in many areas and stressed the need to adopt scientific and sustainable waste management practices. 

Reaffirming the administration's commitment to a cleaner and plastic-free Tawang, she said the ban on single-use plastics and drinking water bottles below two litres is being strictly enforced through regular inspections at the Jang entry point and surprise enforcement drives.

Speaking during the meeting, ZPMs Kyidphel Tenzin Monpa and Mogto Pema Tsering appreciated the students for their impressive presentations and assured full support in strengthening waste management efforts in their respective blocks. They also proposed forming committees at different levels to improve implementation and monitoring.

The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks by ADC Rinchin Leta, who thanked all participants for their valuable contributions and reaffirmed the district administration's commitment to building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Tawang through collective community action.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. Dr. Lige Basar, Three Others Killed in Assam Crash

  Khetri/Itanagar, May 29:  A tragic road accident in Assam's Khetri area on Friday claimed the lives of four people from Arunachal Pradesh, including a senior veterinary officer, his wife, and two medical students, triggering widespread condolences across the state. The deceased have been identified as Dr. Lige Basar, Veterinary Officer of Keyi Panyor district and president of the Basar Aao Welfare Association (BAWA), his wife Kunga Doima Basar, their son Gemar Basar, and Karma S. Khirmey, Gemar's friend and fellow MBBS student. According to traffic officials, the accident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and noon when the Mahindra Bolero (AR-01Q-0042) in which they were travelling reportedly collided with a truck parked along National Highway 27 in Assam's Khetri area. All four occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.
