Assam Man Arrested in Viral Sexual Harassment Case in Nirjuli

NIRJULI, July 3: 

In a swift and coordinated operation, the Nirjuli Police arrested a 26-year-old man from Assam in connection with a viral sexual harassment case that shocked residents of the Itanagar Capital Region.

The incident came to light on June 9, 2026, after a disturbing video circulated widely on social media. The footage showed a young woman being stalked while on her way to computer classes in Rayo Colony. 

The accused allegedly approached the victim, touched her inappropriately, and exposed himself in public.

The victim displayed remarkable courage by resisting the assault and throwing stones at the accused, forcing him to flee the scene. The incident drew widespread public outrage and prompted an immediate police response.

Based on the victim's complaint, Nirjuli Police registered Case No. 37/2026 under Sections 74, 75(2), 78(2), 79, and 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an intensive investigation.

The investigation, led by Lady Sub-Inspector Topi Josham, involved extensive technical analysis and field inquiries. 

The accused was identified as Imdadul Rahman (26), a labourer from Sonapur in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. Acting on credible intelligence, a police team comprising SI Topi Josham and Constables Tana Bhud, Tana Chakro, and Yeshi Tsering tracked the suspect to his hideout in Assam, where he was successfully apprehended.

Superintendent of Police, Itanagar Capital Region (ICR), Naharlagun, Dr. Nyelam Nega, commended the victim for her bravery and presence of mind during the incident. 

He also reaffirmed the commitment of the ICR Police to ensuring the safety and security of women and assured that strict action would be taken against those involved in crimes against women.

Three Held for Mithun Theft in East Siang

  PASIGHAT, July 17:  In a successful joint operation, Mebo Police and Pasighat Police, with active support from the Mithun Owners Association, arrested three persons for allegedly stealing and illegally transporting a mithun.  The stolen animal was successfully recovered. The accused have been identified as Philip Lego (28) of Ayeng Village under Mebo Police Station, Kanggong Lego (19) of Ayeng Village, and Nandu Nath (22), a driver from Chumoni Village in Assam's North Lakhimpur district. According to police, the accused allegedly stole the mithun from the Partung area and were transporting it towards the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).  Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted the vehicle carrying the stolen animal at the Gumto Police Check Gate, leading to the recovery of the mithun and the arrest of all three accused. Dr. Lige Basar, Three Others Killed in Assam Crash

  Khetri/Itanagar, May 29:  A tragic road accident in Assam's Khetri area on Friday claimed the lives of four people from Arunachal Pradesh, including a senior veterinary officer, his wife, and two medical students, triggering widespread condolences across the state. The deceased have been identified as Dr. Lige Basar, Veterinary Officer of Keyi Panyor district and president of the Basar Aao Welfare Association (BAWA), his wife Kunga Doima Basar, their son Gemar Basar, and Karma S. Khirmey, Gemar's friend and fellow MBBS student. According to traffic officials, the accident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and noon when the Mahindra Bolero (AR-01Q-0042) in which they were travelling reportedly collided with a truck parked along National Highway 27 in Assam's Khetri area.
